Victoria memorial honours Canadian soldiers who served in Afghanistan

A new permanent monument honoring all the members of the Canadian Armed Forces who died serving in Afghanistan mission has arrived in Victoria, BC.

The Greater Victoria Afghanistan Memorial lists the names of 163 men and women who made the supreme sacrifice during the mission but is also meant as a tribute to those who made it back home.

The lieutenant governor of British Columbia Judith Guichon, Premier John Horgan, the Ambassador of Afghanistan to Canada, Shinkai Karokhail, and the Consul General of Afghanistan in British Columbia, Mohammad Salem Wahdat, were among the dignitaries.

The monument honors the estimated 40,000 of Canadian who served in Afghanistan between 2001 and 2014.

The memorial features the names of the 163 Canadians killed during the mission to Afghanistan including 158 soldiers, 4 public servants, and one journalist.

Canadian called Afghanistan a country that is of priority for Canada that assistance and support would continue for development of Afghanistan and Afghan national security forces.

Afghanistan thanked Canada for the assistance and support, also appreciate the sacrifices Canadian troops have made within the past 13 years in Afghanistan.
